Dear President Barack Obama,

First of all, I’d like to congratulate you on becoming the 44th president and the very first African- American to be such an amazing president to become.
I as well of many of my classmates, friends, and family are so excited and anticipated for great change and new hope to our country. I also would like to commend you on your motivation to make the necessary changes needed to support America and the ideals Americans should be concerned with. Withdrawing from Iraq and the war on terror, fixing the economy, and making our US more energy efficient are a few of the topics that your plans address with solutions that are beneficial.
We are in the middle of a war in Iraq with thousands already dead and more dying everyday. Our government is one of the best in the World and if you have that I think the problem should have been dealt with awhile ago. The war in Iraq is not helping us, we are spending tens of millions everyday in Iraq alone and that’s all some schools get in a year if they’re lucky. So why should we stay there if we are losing money in an already big depression that the US is in? In your agenda you gave the Secretary of Defense and military commanders a new mission in Iraq: Ending the War which would remove all soliders in 16 months. That would be the summer of 2010 which I think is a date so many parents, friends, and family have waited for.

The second issue to be addressed is the god awful economy or the second Great Depression as many have already called it. With each passing day, families across America are watching their bills pile up, while their savings disappear. The economy has gone downhill in the last five years, making millions of people to lose their jobs and will continue to do so if we don’t start fixing this problem before it gets worse. The two weeks before you got into office I noticed how you put the wheels in motions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that will jumpstart job creation. Making up to 3 million jobs with a long-term growth, by doubling the production of alternative energy in the next three years. It also is investing in the science, research, and technology that will lead to new medical breakthroughs, new discoveries, and entire new industries.
Which brings me to my last issue of making our US more energy efficient. Our addiction to foreign oil is wreaking havoc on our environment, crippling our economy and strains the budgets of working families all across America. A few promises you have also made are put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon on the road by 2015 and implement an economy-wide, cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050. Our world is changing because of the situation of global warming and the cap-and-trade system will help start that even more and thank you for getting to it.
The decisions you make in the coming years will shape our future for generations to come. President Obama you were elected 44th president of the United States on a promise of "change" and "A more perfect union”, good luck and God Bless you Mr. President and God Bless the United States of America.

Sincerely,

Austin Nelson of Virginia
