Dear President Barack Obama,

First of all, I’d like to congratulate you on becoming the 44th president and the very first African- American to be such an amazing president to become.
I as well of many of my classmates, friends, and family are so excited and anticipated for great change and new hope to our country. I also would like to commend you on your motivation to make the necessary changes needed to support America and the ideals Americans should be concerned with. Withdrawing from Iraq and the war on terror, fixing the economy, and making our US more energy efficient are a few of the topics that your plans address with solutions that are beneficial.
We are in the middle of a war in Iraq with thousands already dead and more dying everyday. Our government is one of the best in the World and if you have that I think the problem should have been dealt with awhile ago. The war in Iraq is not helping us, we are spending tens of millions everyday in Iraq alone and that’s all some schools get in a year if they’re lucky. So why should we stay there if we are losing money in an already big depression that the US is in? In your agenda you gave the Secretary of Defense and military commanders a new mission in Iraq: Ending the War which would remove all soliders in 16 months. That would be the summer of 2010 which I think is a date so many parents, friends, and family have waited for.

The second issue to be addressed is the god awful economy or the second Great Depression as many have already called it. With each passing day, families across America are watching their bills pile up, while their savings disappear. The economy has gone downhill in the last five years, making millions of people to lose their jobs and will continue to do so if we don’t start fixing this problem before it gets worse. The two weeks before you got into office I noticed how you put the wheels in motions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that will jumpstart job creation. Making up to 3 million jobs with a long-term growth, by doubling the production of alternative energy in the next three years. It also is investing in the science, research, and technology that will lead to new medical breakthroughs, new discoveries, and entire new industries.
Which brings me to my last issue of making our US more energy efficient. Our addiction to foreign oil is wreaking havoc on our environment, crippling our economy and strains the budgets of working families all across America. A few promises you have also made are put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon on the road by 2015 and implement an economy-wide, cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050. Our world is changing because of the situation of global warming and the cap-and-trade system will help start that even more and thank you for getting to it.
The decisions you make in the coming years will shape our future for generations to come. President Obama you were elected 44th president of the United States on a promise of "change" and "A more perfect union”, good luck and God Bless you Mr. President and God Bless the United States of America.

Sincerely,

Austin Nelson of Virginia

Today is the day” Evan said. It was the big day of the soccer championship of the 17-18 year olds and it was his last day, last year on a soccer team before college. He was in his bed sitting up looking around the room. He saw his little fish swimming around in his fish tank. All of his soccer trophies and medals from past victories and teams. So he wanted it to be the best one and finish out in style since he was the starting center forward. Evan got out of bed, jumped up and hit his head against the ceiling. His mom yelled to him “What was that noise!?! But, breakfast is ready, come and get it before it gets cold sweetie.” He puts on his black and grey underarmer, his black and white jersey, and his black shorts and goes downstairs to breakfast.Evan looks at a picture of his dad on the wall as he goes down the wooden stairs. Evan gets kind of sad and happy at the same time and says to himself “Dad I’m going to be as great as you were.” His father was killed in a soccer game from someone going up for the ball with their feet and hitting him in the head killing him instantly. Evan always looked up to his dad for everything, like playing soccer and being a good, respectable man. Evan kissed the necklace around his neck, which was a golden soccer ball that his dad would have won if he hadn’t of died that day. He got to the bottom of the stairs and turned off the light to the upstairs. He turned towards the kitchen and the sun was shining brightly, coming through the kitchen window and it lit up the whole room. His feet got cold as soon as he touched the tiled kitchen floor and said “WOW, that’s cold, burr”. Evan’s mom said “Then why don’t you put some socks on then silly.” Evan sits down and his mom had made him his favorite breakfast. It includes scrambled eggs with a little bit of salt and pepper, five slices of crispy bacon not cooked too much or too little, home fries with some hot peppers to give it a little heat and onions to mellow it out, while being cooked in some of the bacon grease, but last but not least three large pancakes the size of a hand! To drink it all down was a large glass of whole milk. While Evan was eating his mom asked him “How do you think you will do today?” and finished the last bite of his eggs and said “We are going to win!! I mean I’m on the team, dah.” He laughed.Evan got in the blue minivan with the SOCA sticker on the back of the car and they left for the game. He was in the passenger side listening to music getting him pumped up for the game. He thought in his head “This game is going to be my own little World Cup!” while listening to “We Are the Champions” by Queen. He gets out of the car and thinks he sees his father in the stands about to watch the game and he looks back and he is wasn’t there. Evan thinks “Did I just see my dad, that can’t be??” The game starts and Evan isn’t really feeling that good, playing wise that is, he thinks he is being slow and he is missing balls and not passing well. The soccer game feels to him that its being played around him and the coach sits him on the bench. The referee blows his whistle for half time. Evan is bummed that he is playing so bad and the team is just tied instead of crushing the other team at this point. The half time is almost over and someone whispers in his ear “Come on, you’ve got this boy. I know you are great, so get out there and show me you are as great as I was!” Evan turns his head around and no one is there and feels really spooked and then thinks “Its dad he believes in me, he watching me.” He kisses his golden soccer ball on his necklace and tells the coach hes got it now and will not dissapoint him. Evan goes out in the second half and dominates. He passes the balls great, got to the balls great and scored two times. He was very proud of himself because he knew his father watched him play and from now on knew he was watching over him.

final

It was a Saturday morning with almost perfect clear skies and the sun was shining brightly. Today was the Jefferson Swim League Championship and my little brother, Owen or Owee, what I like to call him, was swimming a 25 yard butterfly swim and a 25 yard freestyle swim. I came a little late so sadly to say, I just missed him swim fly, so I made sure I would see him swim freestyle because he is one of the top five in his 5-6 age group.I walked around waiting till his number was called, so I went to the snack bar and got a drink and talked to friends while I waited. Over the intercom they called event 21p, please report to the lower deck. So I went in and made sure I had a good view of his race, that I knew he would place well in. The first heat went and the little five and six year olds got around 27 seconds, 28 seconds and then the 2nd heat, 3rd, 4th, till it was the last heat which my brother was in. I was thinking in my head “Owee you are my brother, you take after me in trying to be the best, so you better get that first place ribbon”.My heart is beating slowly, anticipating to be beating faster. The judge says take your marks……. beep. The race starts!! He jumps in about 3rd with a good streamline. He comes from under the water kicking fast and pulling those little arms making him go fast. I’m yelling “go Owee go, go Owee go, kick those skinny legs”. About a quarter way through the race he was about half a body length behind and I’m still yelling, watching him trying to be number one. At the half way mark he was about neck in neck with the boy in first. I thought the boy in the lane beside him is starting to get tired so I thought to myself “I think he can, I think he can win this race, kick those tiny feet”. So he is in the final stretch, a little bit ahead of the boy in second place. I thought “you better win this race come on you got this and remember what mom said you can get ice cream for winning”. Where they touch I couldn’t see so I was saying “come on touch first, touch first” and the results came up on the big screen. 1st place lane 6 23.57and I went off because that was my brother’s lane, little six year old was the best swimmer in the area. I said “that’s my brother; I knew he could win boo yah”. So I went down to where he got out of the water and he was taking off his goggles and he had red circles around his eyes from them. I threw him a towel because he was always saying “I’m cold” after each time he got out of the water and I said to him “Owen you got first; Good job Owee!!” I came back up and I saw Huck my step father there and he said “Did you see Owen swim, that was amazing” I replied “yeah that was sick, I knew he would be either first or second but you got to admit he is one fast little guy”. Owen came upstairs after about a minute or two and I said “that’s my boy, first place” and then I picked him up and he had a big grin on his face. That was one of the happiest days I had over the summer.
